Same-Day Crowns in Levittown, NY: Your Permanent Crown in a Single Visit

For years, getting a crown meant two appointments, a goopy impression, a temporary crown that might pop off at dinner, and a two- to three-week wait. At Revive Dental Studio in Levittown, many crown patients can avoid that process.

Our office has an on-site 5-axis milling machine that lets us design, craft and place a permanent ceramic crown in one visit. Here’s how it works, how it compares with a traditional crown, and how to tell whether it’s right for your tooth.

What Is a Dental Crown, and When Do You Need One?

A crown is a custom cap that covers a tooth to restore its strength, shape and appearance. Crowns are commonly recommended when:

  • A tooth is cracked or broken.
  • A large old filling is failing.
  • A back tooth needs protection after a root canal.
  • Decay has destroyed too much of the tooth for a filling.

Before we recommend a full crown, we always ask whether a more conservative onlay would protect your tooth just as well. Read our guide to onlays versus crowns to learn more.

How Same-Day Crowns Work at Revive Dental Studio

Step 1: Exam and Preparation

We numb the tooth, remove decay or weakened structure, and shape the tooth to receive the crown.

Step 2: Digital Scan — No Goopy Impressions

Instead of biting into impression putty, we take a precise digital scan of your teeth to capture the shape and details needed to design your restoration.

Step 3: Custom Design

Using design software, we create your crown on screen, matching your bite, the shape of neighboring teeth and your natural tooth shade.

Step 4: Milling on Our 5-Axis Machine

The design goes to our in-office 5-axis milling machine, which carves your crown from a solid block of strong, tooth-colored ceramic. The machine moves and tilts the material in multiple directions to reproduce details such as cusps, grooves and contact points.

Milling itself can take under an hour, although the full appointment includes preparation, scanning, design, fitting and bonding.

Step 5: Finishing and Bonding

We check the fit, polish or characterize the crown for a natural appearance, and bond it to your tooth. When your case is suitable for same-day treatment, you can leave with your permanent crown rather than a temporary one.

Same-Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

Feature Same-Day Crown Traditional Lab Crown
Appointments Typically one Usually two
Temporary crown Usually not needed Often worn while the final crown is made
Impressions Digital scan Digital or traditional impressions
Waiting period Often completed the same day Frequently involves a lab turnaround period
Materials Suitable chairside-milled ceramic A range of ceramics, zirconia and other materials
Best suited for Many single crowns and suitable urgent repairs Cases requiring specialized materials or complex laboratory work

The right choice depends on the tooth, your bite, the amount of remaining tooth structure and the type of restoration needed. Same-day treatment is convenient, but it isn’t automatically the best option for every case.

Are Same-Day Crowns as Strong as Lab Crowns?

This is one of the most common questions patients ask. Research on chairside computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic crowns is encouraging, although results vary by material, clinical situation and study.

A 2023 retrospective study published in the Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics reported favorable six-year survival results for lithium disilicate CAD/CAM crowns. A separate 2023 long-term follow-up study also reported encouraging survival results for chairside-milled lithium disilicate crowns.

No crown lasts forever. Its longevity depends on your bite, grinding habits, home care, the material used and regular dental checkups. If you clench or grind your teeth, we may recommend a custom nightguard to help protect your restoration.

When a Traditional Crown May Be Better

Same-day crowns work well for many patients, but we may recommend a laboratory-made restoration when:

  • Several front teeth need to match precisely as part of a cosmetic makeover.
  • Your gums need time to heal before the final restoration is made.
  • A specific material or layered design is needed for a complex case.
  • Your tooth or bite requires a restoration that is better produced by a dental laboratory.

We’ll explain why we’re recommending one option over another so you can make an informed decision.

Broken Tooth? Same-Day Emergency Care in Levittown

A cracked or broken tooth rarely happens at a convenient time. Because we can mill crowns on site, many patients with a damaged tooth can be examined and restored in a single visit when their case is suitable.

We also offer Sunday appointments, giving local patients another option when dental problems arise outside the usual workweek.

If you’ve broken a tooth, call our emergency line at (516) 809-8700. In the meantime, rinse gently with warm water, save any broken pieces, and avoid chewing on the affected side.

Frequently Asked Questions About Same-Day Crowns

How long does a same-day crown appointment take?

Most appointments take a few hours from start to finish, including preparation, scanning, design, milling and bonding. Milling itself may take under an hour.

Is a same-day crown permanent?

Yes. When same-day treatment is appropriate, the crown placed is your final restoration rather than a temporary crown. It still requires good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups.

How long do same-day crowns last?

Published studies show good survival rates for chairside ceramic crowns. Longevity varies depending on the material, bite forces, oral hygiene and other individual factors. Many crowns last a decade or longer, but no restoration lasts forever.

Are same-day crowns covered by dental insurance?

Insurance may cover a same-day crown similarly to other crowns, but coverage depends on your plan, annual benefits and clinical requirements. Our team can help you review your benefits before treatment.

Does getting a same-day crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed during preparation, so you should not feel sharp pain during the procedure. Some patients experience mild sensitivity or soreness afterward.

Can I get a same-day crown during an emergency visit?

Often, yes. If you have a broken tooth or lost filling, contact us for an evaluation. Depending on the tooth’s condition and the treatment needed, we may be able to restore it that day.

Do I always need a crown, or could I get an onlay?

Not always. If enough healthy tooth structure remains, a bonded onlay may protect the tooth while preserving more of its natural structure. We can evaluate whether an onlay is appropriate for your situation.
